Poema del Mar is not just the largest aquarium in the Canary Islands. It is one of the most singular aquariums in Europe — and it holds a world record that very few people know about. This guide brings together everything you need to make the most of your visit.
The world record the aquarium holds
The largest curved perspex window ever built
140 tonnes · 36 metres long · 7 metres high. A single curved piece that lets you see the deep ocean like no other aquarium in the world.
The three zones of the route
The Jungle
A tribute to the five continents. Tropical habitats with chameleons, land tortoises, crocodiles and the famous coloured frogs of the Amazon — venomous but safely behind glass. A jungle with walls of ferns and palms that surprises you from the moment you enter.
The Reef
A walkway wraps around a cylinder with over 400,000 litres of water where fish swim over a coral field. The tropical zone: colourful fish, rays and the most complete representation of the reef ecosystem in the archipelago.
The Deep Ocean
The centrepiece. The underwater tunnel and the world record curved window. Up to 8 sharks of different species live here. Watching them move above the glass from below is one of the most striking experiences the aquarium offers. Sea turtles in recovery are also housed in the marine hospital.
The Veril — the Canarian zone
A fourth area that many guides miss: the Veril, dedicated exclusively to Canarian waters. Over a hundred moray eels, parrotfish, ornate wrasse and the endemic species of the Canarian Atlantic. The most authentic zone in the aquarium — and the one with the shortest queues.

Online tickets are often slightly cheaper than at the door. Platforms like Civitatis or the aquarium's own website allow advance booking and queue-skipping. In summer, booking several days ahead is strongly recommended.
Opening hours
The aquarium is open every day of the year from 9:00 to 18:00. Last entry is one hour before closing. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.
How long do you need?
The full route at a comfortable pace takes 2 to 3 hours. With young children who want to stop at every tank, allow 3.5 hours. There are three catering points inside the complex — no need to leave for lunch.
How to get there
The aquarium is at Muelle Sanapú in Las Palmas harbour, about 200 metres from Las Canteras beach. Walkable from the city centre in around 15 minutes. Several bus lines (guagua) stop near the harbour. Paid parking is available in the harbour building directly in front of the aquarium.

Arrive at opening at 9:00. The first hour is the quietest and the natural light entering the tanks creates spectacular effects in the water that disappear once it fills with visitors.
